Who is a Sofer Stam?

A sofer stam is a specially trained Jewish scribe who writes sacred texts by hand. The term stam refers to the three main items they write: Torah scrolls, tefillin (the small leather boxes with scrolls inside worn during prayer), and mezuzahs (the scrolls placed in small cases on doorposts). These are some of the most important objects in Jewish religious life.

Becoming a sofer requires years of study, not only to master the art of beautiful, precise handwriting but also to understand the religious laws that dictate how each letter must be written. These scribes use specific materials, like parchment made from kosher animal skin, and carefully craft each letter with a quill and special ink. Even a small mistake can invalidate the entire scroll, so the work is extremely detailed.

Beyond just writing, the sofer is seen as playing a spiritual role in helping to preserve Jewish traditions. The scrolls they create are used daily in prayer, rituals, and religious ceremonies. A sofer’s work is not just about beautiful calligraphy; it’s about ensuring that these sacred texts are made with the utmost care and respect for the laws that govern Jewish life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

Does the writing on the parchment fade over time?

Because the writing is on special parchment, with special ink, it will not fade. Of course, you should keep your frames or parchments in a dry place and not in direct sunlight.

Is it allowed, or kosher, to have these in your home or office?

Yes. While Judaism does not favor things such as talismans or 'spells', these are not the same. These are prayers taken directly from Jewish scripture, and are kosher. We use these prayers with the understanding that the words of Torah have power, and we are harnessing that power for the protection and benefit of the Jewish people.

What is the size of the parchment?

The size of each parchment varies based on the particular blessing or prayer you choose. One of the smaller parchments is the famous 'Shmirah La Derech' which is a blessing you are meant to keep in your wallet, as it serves to protect each person wherever they go.

How do we place our orders?

Go to our SHOP and choose which prayer you like. Next, you will complete a brief form where you provide the necessary names needed for each blessing, and then finally you will choose a frame if you would like one. After placing your order, you will receive a confirmation email directly from Yehuda, and he will confirm the timeline to receive your purchase(s).

Can I choose the color of the frame?

You can choose from one of our three styles, we do not offer more options than what we have on our SHOP page.

How long does it take to receive our order?

We ship nationwide, door to door. It usually takes about two weeks to receive orders if you are based in the United States. For European orders, it may take even less.
